With all the homeless small pets, we recommend doing your research before adding a small pet to your family! For small animals, we carry a selection of premium foods, treats, toys, etc. and we also offer boarding and grooming services.
Interested in surrendering an animal?
Housing: We recommend housing two rabbits together. They're social creatures and love the company of their kind!
Cage requirements: The more space the better! We encourage bunny owners to have at least 12 sq ft of space for a cage with daily play time outside of the cage!
Diet: Unlimited grass hay, limited rabbit pellets, and leafy greens and vegetables twice a day. *for young rabbits, alfalfa hay and specially formulated young rabbit pellets should be substituted.
Cleaning: Regular changing of liter boxes is key. Bunny pee and poop is smelly!
Enrichment: Rabbits need lots of behavioral enrichment. This means lots of toys and fun stuff to chew on!
Since we ONLY rescue guinea pigs and we don't buy from breeders, guinea pig availability varies.
Housing: We recommend housing at least two piggies together. They're social creatures and love the company of their kind!
Cage requirements: The more space the better! We encourage guinea pig owners to have at least 8 sq ft of space for a cage with daily play time outside of the cage!
Diet: Unlimited hay, limited guinea pig pellets, and leafy greens and vegetables twice a day. *for young guinea pigs, alfalfa hay and specially formulated young guinea pig pellets should be substituted.
Cleaning: Daily spot cleaning and weekly cage cleaning is key to keeping the piggies nice and clean (and not smelly).
Enrichment: Guinea pigs need lots of behavioral enrichment. This means lots of toys and fun stuff to chew on!
We have a selection of Roborovski Dwarf, Campbell's Dwarf, Winter White Dwarf, and Syrian Hamsters provided by furball critters!
Housing: Dwarf hamsters may be housed together. Syrians must be housed singly.
Cage requirements: The more space the better! We encourage hamster owners to have at least 360 sq in of space for a cage.
Diet: A specially formulated pelleted diet is best! A seeded diet makes a good alternative. Treats should be given minimally to Dwarf Hamsters--they are prone to diabetes.
Cleaning: Cleaning varies depending on cage size. Here at the Animal Connection, we like to clean half of the cage every two weeks (so the hamsters scent remains in the cage).
Enrichment: A wheel is essential! In the wild hamsters run miles and miles every night! Also provide lots of chew toys!
We have rescued Chinchillas occasionally. Call (415)564-6482 for availability
Housing: Chinchillas may be housed together if they are raised together or introduced properly. Their dense fur keeps them warm, so they prefer cooler temperatures.
Cage requirements: The more space the better! We encourage chinchilla owners to have at least 2 sq ft of floor space with a lot of height. These squirrely creature love to jump and perch up high!
Diet: Unlimited hay and limited pellets and fresh water. Their stomachs are very sensitive, so stay away from fresh fruits and veggies.
Cleaning: Daily spot cleaning and litter box changes.
Enrichment: Chinchillas enjoy running on a large wheel! They also need regular dust baths to keep their fur clean. Provide plenty of chew toys for their ever-growing teeth!
