All About Hand-Fed Baby Budgies
Our Hand-Fed Baby Budgies are our most popular parrot. We breed many of them here in the store. When they are a few weeks old, we take over the feeding and caring for them. This allows the budgies to learn to trust us, and then to bond with us.
WHY CONSIDER A BUDGIE?
They are often the perfect choice of pet for someone living in a wall-to-wall apartment/housing in San Francisco; big personality, small body. They are relatively quiet, and do not require a massive cage. They can be very outgoing and affectionate. If you get a Male, he has a very good chance of learning to speak. If you get a Female, she can be very cuddly. Watch out though, both can become demanding, spoiled, and vocal about their unhappiness with you... which is fun to see.
NAME: Budgie, Budgerigar, Parakeet (only in the US)
LIFE SPAN: Average 4-8 years to upwards of 15 years
SEX: Male: Blue Cere (nose), Female: Brown Cere
FOOD REQUIREMENTS: Pellets, Seeds, fruits, vegetables, and sprouts daily. Fresh Food is NOT optional, it is necessary. Millet Spray is given as a treat. Provide Fresh Water Daily.
GROOMING: Regular wing trimming is suggested. Nail trimming may be done if needed.
COMMON ILLNESSES: Prone to tumors. Egg Binding in females.
CLEANING REQUIREMENTS: Cage scrub once a week and change bottom newspaper/bedding.
VETERINARY REQUIREMENTS: Yearly Check-ups suggested.
HANDLING REQUIREMENTS: We don't suggest a minimum time because all budgies have different needs. You should have a goal to handle your bird as OFTEN as you can. A life spent the majority of time in a cage is no life at all.
TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS: Stable temperature needed. Keep bird away from drafts, and any drastic and recurring temperature fluxuations. A Heating lamp is always a good option.
SIZE: The bigger the better. Our rule of thumb: the cage needs to be big enough that the budgie can open his wings all the way out and flap without anything touching his wings or body, and the bars need to be close enough so they can't get their head stuck.
ITEMS: Water dish, food dish, 1-2 natural branch perches
ACCOUTREMENT: 2-3 toys
FAQs ABOUT HAND-FED BUDGIES
I'M NOT ON THE LIST. CAN I HOLD A BABY BUDGIE?
You can hold a budgie that does not have a name tagged on its tank. Once the tank has a name, only that person and their family may handle it. Also, if a budgie is deemed too young, you will have to wait.
HOW DO I GET ON THE LIST?
Call us at 415-564-6482 or come in and ask. Please do not request to go on the list via email.
HOW LONG IS IT?
Currently, we have quite a few people on it. But, we never know how long it will take because some people will get their birds elsewhere, and sometimes we have a baby budgie boom which helps us move through our list faster. A general estimate of the wait time is 2-4 months.
I'M ON THE LIST, NOW WHAT?
Now is the time to do your research if you haven't already. Go to the library, ask your friends who have budgies, learn everything you can about the wonderful little parrot you are about to get. The next phone call you receive from us will let you know to come in and pick out your budgie.
I PICKED MY BUDGIE. CAN YOU TELL ME IF IT IS A BOY OR A GIRL?
No, we cannot. The sex of a budgie cannot be determined until they are about 7 months old. A DNA test can be done at owner's expense.
I PREFER TO HAVE A ....
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee you get a specific sexed budgie. By the time take your bird home, it will still be too young for us to know visually. We also cannot guarantee you get the color you want. Depending on the number of people on our list, it is quite often a get-what-you-get situation.
DOES HAND-FEEDING GUARUNTEE A WELL-BEHAVED BUDGIE?
Its behavior depends partially on it's own personality, and partially on YOU the soon-to-be owner. If you want it to know and trust you, you MUST come in on a regular basis to handle it. If you never come in to visit your bird, it will show by the bird's hesitancy.
IF I DON'T LIKE THE WAY THE BUDGIE BEHAVES, CAN I SWITCH?
We do NOT allow the switching of budgies so please decide carefully.
IF I DON'T LIKE THE WAY THE BUDGIE BEHAVES, CAN I RETURN IT?
We can accept a return on the animal for HEALTH REASONS ONLY. If you do not like the color, the behavior, the sounds, there is NOTHING we can do. PLEASE DECIDE CAREFULLY.
I PICKED MY BUDGIE. CAN I COME IN AND PLAY WITH IT?
Absolutely!!! And it is Encouraged that you do! The more you handle your bird while it's here, the better it will be when you get to take it home!
I KNOW HOW TO HAND-FEED. CAN I TAKE MY BIRD EARLY AND HAND-FEED IT MYSELF?
NO. Under NO circumstances can we allow the budgies leave while they are still being hand-fed. California law states that baby birds can leave a store once, and ONLY when they are fully weaned and eating on their own.
I DON'T WANT TO WAIT FOR HAND-FED ONES. CAN'T I JUST GET THE PARENT-RAISED BUDGIES?
It can be a tough wait, but if you are patient, the pay off is immense. Their big personalities are well worth it. Parent-Raised Budgies have never had human contact. The work to tame and train them will be 10 times harder and you may never get the budgie to where you want it to be. But, in the end, it is up to you.
